I’m in for another long working weekend.
The non-fiction book I’m writing sucks a$$, but it has to be done. I have a deadline of July 1 and that ain’t happening. I just don’t see how it can.
But last weekend we managed to kill off about 40 pages of the darned thing, and I have about 120 to go. That translates into about six chapters if I keep to what the publisher ideally wants to see. Also, there are about 20 built-in pages of required material (which is part of what I may knock out this weekend to get it off my chest), so that really only (ha!) leaves about 100 pages, or five chapters. Now, that really doesn’t sound that hard and if you were sitting in the same seat I am you’d understand why, but a couple of things occur to me:
Second, I don’t know if I can salvage another 100 pages out of this material. There really isn’t all that much to cover. It’s not that complicated, seriously.
But I’ll give it the old college try and see what I can come up with. I’m half-tempted to eke out something like 20 or 30 pages having the book build on lessons already learned, sort of a “now you know it so try it” kind of thing. I’d call that chapter “Putting it all together” and then start banging away. But I have at least two more chapters to rework into this book’s format before I can do that.
Well, it doesn’t really matter because I doubt I can crank out that many pages in a week anyway.
My biggest concern here is besmirching my reputation. This is going to be the second time I missed the publisher’s deadline (which is set sometime AFTER I tell them when I can ACTUALLY have the book done and is NEVER after that time), and I’ve had to complain to get paid every single time they have to cough up money. Good little tech authors I guess just sit quietly and wait for their money to arrive, but I bet they’re not jacked around like I’ve been either. Or if they are they just sort of suck it up and deal with it. (Had I done that, we’d be homeless right now.)
We’ll see, but I don’t expect to be able to blog at ALL next week. (I shouldn’t be blogging now, it’s a no-no.)
What are your weekend plans? Have any?
