Today is day one of Hell Week for me.
Not in the Navy SEAL sort of way, though. No disrespect meant to those boys. More like in the brutal college football practice sort of way, I suppose. Or, the do-something-unpleasant-for-a-week way, most accurately.
I have to cover the ATR desk all week while our ATR Coordinator is out. Again.
I realize people are entitled to their vacation time. And a lot of people take it, and take it in big pieces. The last ATR Coordinator we had didn’t like me worth a darn. She wouldn’t cross the street to spit in my hair, frankly. And that’s fine, because she very seldom missed work. She almost never took more than a couple of days off and didn’t really miss much unless she was sick or something. And then it was usually only a day, maybe two.
So it’s come as a bit of a shock to work with this new ATR Coordinator, who does take long chunks of vacation. She took a week back in February. She’s missed multiple days sick in the last six or seven months. And she’s taking this week off too.
Like I said, I get it. Not everyone is the same, and we were lucky with the previous lady, who had no life and loved her job. That coupled with either no romantic involvement or a long-distance one was a trifecta of attendance and punctuality for us.
Now, I have to pull myself up by my bootstraps and do the work of two people. This is after doing two jobs week before last too, when the Pricing Manager was gone for a week and a day. I’ve had precious little time to work on my own projects and get them out, and now – at almost noon – is the first opportunity I’ve had to take five minutes to myself.
Aside: Is it sad that when I finally have a few minutes to myself, I use that time to blog? I think it might be.
How the rest of the day shapes up won’t have as much impact on the week as I’d like. I’d love to say today will set the tone for the week, but it won’t. A lot of companies will be especially busy trying to mitigate against the shorter week next week, which means they’re doing whatever they can – especially on Friday afternoon – to shovel it off their desk onto mine.
I know my family has been praying for me. Maybe that will work some. Time will show. But if I don’t check in again this week, you’ll at least know why.
See you when I can!
